TPMS Explained: Why Tire Pressure Light Trips in Summer

When the tire pressure light comes on during a July drive through Carthage, most people assume something under the hood broke. Usually, nothing did. Summer heat does exactly what physics predicts, and understanding TPMS is the fastest way to know whether that alert means "Check now" or "Pull over immediately."

What TPMS Means and How It Works

TPMS stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System, a safety feature the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has required on every new vehicle sold in the U.S. since the 2008 model year, under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 138. Most vehicles use a direct system, where a TPMS sensor mounted inside each wheel measures actual air pressure and reports it to the vehicle's computer in real time.

Older or lower-cost models sometimes use an indirect system instead, which skips the physical tire pressure sensor entirely and estimates pressure by comparing wheel rotation speeds through the anti-lock braking system. Either design exists to catch dangerous underinflation before it causes a blowout.

Why the Low Tire Pressure Light Comes On

The tire pressure light isn't random. It triggers when one or more tires drop below the pressure printed on the sticker inside the driver's door frame, not the maximum PSI stamped on the tire's sidewall. NHTSA recommends checking pressure monthly while tires are cold, since even a slow, invisible leak of a few PSI can set off the warning.

Why Tire Pressure Lights Trip More in Summer Heat

Tire pressure isn't fixed. It rises and falls with temperature. According to the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, inflation pressure changes by roughly 1 to 2 PSI for every 10-degree shift in temperature. A few things compound that swing during a Missouri summer:

  • Hot asphalt heats a tire faster than the surrounding air temperature alone

  • Highway speeds add friction heat on top of ambient heat

  • Tires set slightly high in spring cross the warning threshold once summer heat is added

None of that signals a mechanical problem. It means the air inside the tire expanded enough to cross the sensor's threshold.

Blinking vs. Steady Tire Pressure Light: What It Means

A steady light means low pressure in at least one tire and calls for a pressure check as soon as possible. A blinking TPMS light means something different: The system itself, not the tires, is malfunctioning. That pattern usually runs for 60 to 90 seconds after startup, then stays lit, pointing to a sensor, battery, or module problem a technician needs to diagnose.

How to Reset Your Tire Pressure Light

Once every tire is at the correct cold pressure, most vehicles clear the light after a short drive. If it stays on, look for a TPMS reset button, usually located under the steering wheel, and hold it until the light blinks three times. Vehicles without a reset button need the system relearned through the onboard menu or a diagnostic tool.
